How to Create the Perfect Sleep Environment

Your bedroom should be a sanctuary for sleep. Research shows that environmental factors significantly impact sleep quality, duration, and how refreshed you feel upon waking.

Temperature Matters

The ideal bedroom temperature for sleep is between 60-67 degrees Fahrenheit (15-19 degrees Celsius). Your body naturally cools down as you fall asleep, and a cooler room supports this process.

Tips:

  • Set your thermostat to 65 degrees F before bed
  • Use breathable bedding materials like cotton or bamboo
  • Consider a cooling mattress pad if you tend to sleep hot
  • Control the Light

Light is the most powerful cue for your circadian rhythm. Even small amounts of light can disrupt melatonin production and fragment your sleep.

    Tips:

  • Use blackout curtains or a sleep mask
  • Remove or cover LED lights from electronics
  • Avoid bright overhead lights 1-2 hours before bed
  • Use warm-toned, dim lighting in the evening
  • Sound Management

While complete silence works for some, many people benefit from consistent background sound that masks disruptive noises.

    Tips:

  • Try white noise, pink noise, or nature sounds
  • Use MoonSleeper's built-in sound library for curated sleep audio
  • Keep your bedroom away from street noise if possible
  • Consider earplugs for especially noisy environments
  • Declutter Your Space

A cluttered bedroom can increase stress and make it harder to relax. Keep your sleep space clean and minimal.

Your bedroom should primarily be associated with sleep. Remove work materials, exercise equipment, and other stimulating items when possible.
